OUR JOURNEY

A Legacy of Faith. A Vision That Continues.

A Call to ServeOur ministry’s story began in 1952, when H.C. Dixon, a native of Jamaica, responded to God’s call to minister in the Virgin Islands. Although unfamiliar with the region, he and his wife stepped out in faith, laying the foundation for a ministry that would touch generations. The Dixons arrived in the Virgin Islands in 1965. Through open-air evangelistic services in Virgin Gorda and other communities, they shared the Gospel and began gathering a congregation. East End became their primary base, where their two-storey stone home served as an early centre of ministry.Built Through Faith and CommunityAs the congregation grew, land was secured through the generosity of the late Frank Johnson, and construction of the church began. The work brought together the entire community. Children transported building materials, women contributed their labour and skilled tradesmen and volunteers offered their expertise. Missionary Hugh Pitzer provided equipment, Mr. Felix Davis assisted with construction and members such as Brother Cedar George gave foundational support.Sister Bernie Sweeney contributed artwork, including the inscription:“Sirs, we would see Jesus.” — John 12:21The church became a lasting expression of shared faith, sacrifice and unity.Serving the Whole PersonFrom its earliest years, the ministry embraced a vision of serving the whole person — spiritually, intellectually and socially.A kindergarten and a secondary training school provided educational opportunities, including classes in shorthand, typewriting, accounting and English. Dedicated teachers included Sister Elizabeth George, Sister Sylvia Dooley, Sister Jermaine Hall and Sister Amanda Hall, alongside others. Many who received training through the ministry later became part of the government workforce, extending the church’s contribution into the development of the Territory.Growth and LeadershipAs the ministry expanded, recreation halls and classrooms were added, with renovations undertaken by Brother W. Jones and his team. The retirement of long-serving leadership in 1981 marked a significant transition. Pastor Peter Godden subsequently became the first pastor of the new leadership era. Further remodelling followed in 1990, supporting the congregation’s continued growth.Successive pastors, ministers and members have carried the work forward, building upon the foundation established by the pioneers.A New Sanctuary and a Wider VisionA generous gift of land created an opportunity for further expansion. Under the leadership of the late Pastor Frett and the church board, plans began for a facility serving both the church and the wider community.Groundbreaking took place in 2011. Designed in the shape of a cross, the development envisioned an expanded sanctuary, space for conventions and district gatherings, conference facilities, administrative offices and a multipurpose hall for youth activities, camps, receptions and community events. Accessibility and suitable facilities for all were central to the plans.Members, leaders and supporters within and beyond the church contributed materials, labour and financial support. Through seasons of progress and challenge, their commitment sustained the work.Continuing the VisionToday, we gather in Hodges Creek as beneficiaries of the faith, obedience and generosity of those who came before us.We continue their work by sharing the Gospel, nurturing believers, serving our community and carrying the ministry forward for future generations. Our journey continues — grounded in Christ and guided by faith.
